The existence of a vibrant middle class tends to spread the points of access to power and to diminish the authoritarian strains of all factions primed and ready to go forward and commit their ideas of holy unity.

The ideas of a possible existence of a middle class serve a similar function.

The absence of any hope that such a thing as a middle class may be possible leave the fields open to all manners of saviors.

Policies may come and fail. They may be non too bright and all too corrupt

But they must be open to establishing the ideas of a sustained, broad based population. Power in a democracy should look to find a home in the solid middle …. that which may form itself by accident and common interest, by luck and sustained prosperity, by a culture that calls such a thing good. These were the gifts of a once upon a time. These are not the gifts of now. The ground beneath the feet of that dream or illusion is shifting and caving and the new paradigms may find these old tintypes quaint and sentimental.

It is far easier to break the backs of those we own rather than try to do so to those who own us.

The poor and the dispossessed have no powerful constituency and therefor can be easily vilified and labelled as cheats and pikers, welfare abusers, scum who steal money from the public trough.

The wealthy, the gods, the connected own constituencies and can then steal and plunder without push back from all guardians of public morals. Might makes right and might corrals the standard bearers of public decency.

The poor and the dispossessed can make sublime canon fodder for those who make the conflicts, the weapons, the games, but they are there to be used as a resource ….. too many stop being poor and dispossessed, start having a stake in society and good canon fodder gets harder to find.

Our hatreds are, as always, much stronger than our ideals. Our ideals, if not totalitarian, speak to a rising march of civilization ever more towards a more “civilized” set of thinking and acting. The ideals of respect for life, liberty and the pursuits of happiness seemed, once, to be the way of the world.

Such is the presumption of the “evolved” man or woman. Greater degrees of education. more access to exchanges of ideas, more awareness of the self interests of rationality and power balance as ways to avoid slaughter; more openness to critical thought would serve as a ballast, an anchor.

Our hatreds are, as always, much stronger than our ideals. In “advanced” developed societies hatred is a fine de facto force of passion and power seeking. In”troubled” societies with order a dream and chaos a whirlwind hatred is a fine charger. It works well and demands no effort.

The devolution of common ground amongst the “communities” of nations holds that no stabilizing force of any stripe has ideals worth honoring. Hatred, always at home, loves all vacuums.

A democracy allocates power in ways that hopefully spread it around and give voice to as many folk as possible. These humble gentry need to be courted, bought off, manipulated,, defanged, enraptured, stomped upon depending upon the amount of real input any given population sample may be able to obtain. Democracy, in itself, is a good form of government in so far as the corruption of same is, in general terms, the least evil form of government ….. that which makes the most in the corrupt society happy in their corruption.

Power seekers in nominal democracies either manipulate the frameworks of same, work effectively outside of the frameworks of same using said frameworks as a blind, or work , generally, within the framework choosing to maximize opportunities, vulnerabilities and flaws in the system or dreaming to reduce same. The rational power seeker wishes see the framework as an obstacle to be overcome.

Our general run of politicos today are a general run of politicos. Save for those who are of the general run of power seekers. The goal of one, the politico is to be a corrupt soul. The goal of the other, the power seeker, is to wish for a system different from what we got, more efficient in use. This is the gift of our modern soul. Power seekers are the ones with the light in their eyes.

We are worried completely and dramatically and faithfully here and all about … here and all about the state of our knowledge, our educational prowess, the mass ability of our gentry and folk to become bodies with functioning minds and minds with moving parts.

A real and noble ideal worthy of the best of our natures and the better angels of our natures. We wish smart folk and sensible folk and worthy folk to inhabit our space and time and make life a treasure for us all.

But, sadly, however, tragically, however … try as we might … work as we will …. strain as we must … some things are just beyond the pale. We strive to emulate the best of all of us in public and private life … in the worlds of power and thought, opinion and choice. Tis a sad, hard task. These are folk gifted from above. They of the natural order of things are. That which they have is unattainable.

With the absolute paucity of any serious minded public persona we are left with the constant droning on of lame second rate and third rate minds playing little boy and girl fraternity and sorority games with themselves and calling it big person actions.

What are the new paradigms in our hot new world of today?

In the period between the two world wars democracy was in peril. Lost in the fascist bastions of Germany, Italy, Spain. Crushed in the Communist bastions of Russia, China, demeaned in militaristic Japan.. A disordered, unruly, economically challenged word was in need of order, stability, trains running on time.

Vague unrest. Lack of mobility. Little freedom of thought, movement, little freedom from the slavery of wages, the absence of wages, fears for survival and food, clothing, shelter, the inability to counter the gun ….. the world that drove the populus. Systems need to be trusted, feared, respected. The state rests upon the acquiescence of the poor (Chateaubriand).

The poor can be a mob, a downtrodden blight upon the earth, a handy bit of useful fodder for those who need human labor, canon fodder, drones. A state that makes comfort, survival at the benevolence of others …. those who control access to wealth, freedom of movement, wages, input into the exercise of power …. this is the state that values a system that can be handled, used, abused, given over to those who know better, who know better by all manners of might making right.

At what balances of power are we to find grace and happiness?

This serves the interests of order.

Fiduciary responsibility demands that business models stand firm in the desire to maximize the profits and gains of the shareholders, the investor class and all of the lucky others who benefit with gains made in pension investments and 401K ‘s. The employee is an expense who will get that which the market will bear. There is no power there save for the trust in the free unfettered market. There is no counter balance. Unions are the devils plaything.

Studies of subjects not germane to hive or pigeon hole or numb body occupying space in a dedicated ordered, preset position are not of service to the needs of a workable market place. Higher learning and a broad based understanding of the dead world around keep the focus off of the dedicated tasks of the task and wage slave.

The fall from grace from and advancing society comes when the advancement of society is defined by the creation of sharpened worker drones.

Mobsters in film and story are beloved by all. The endless associations with the means of power, force, intimidation lifts the spirits and charges the hackles of red blooded folk everywhere. Chests can be puffed out. Squints can be flinty. Scowls can be real.

Mobsters in film and story are beloved by all. Templates of behavior can be laid. Facets of aggression and authoritarianism can be nurtured. The way to the imposition of will can be studied. Enemies can be dealt with.

We are going to flee from the authoritarian strains in our political culture by championing the middle class and its sustainability. We are going to intentionally strengthen the broad based middle that serves as a bulwark against the influences of the snide, the wealthy, the powerful and those outside of the general rules and mores of our society.

We are going to strengthen the broad based middle class so that its lovely self and selves will be able to establish itself as a defining factor of nationhood open to the idea of a nationhood that is a self contained unit not open to the blackmail and machinations of those who are citizens of the world or owners of it.

We are going to strengthen the broad based middle class so that political sanity may reign and extreme views may have something large, heavy and bulbous to run up against.

We are going to do such things so that a rational stable society may emerge.
